Transit Ambassadors

The Transit Ambassador program offers personalized orientation for new users of public transit in Napa County. Trained volunteers assist new riders in learning how to read schedules, plan a trip, where to catch the bus, how to use transfers, how to pay the fare, how passes work and about special features, such as the wheelchair lift and “kneeler” work.

Who can use the Transit Ambassador Program?
Anyone may request this service. Our staff will coordinate your training, including special needs, with an Ambassador. Senior citizens, youth and people with disabilities are encouraged to take advantage of the program.
The Transit Ambassador program can help those who currently use the Taxi Scrip Program transition to becoming a VINE bus rider. Ambassadors will also teach VINE Go passengers how to make routine trip by bus; such as, to the grocery store, to the pharmacy, or to visit a friend or relative. The first step to flexible, independent travel is to learn how to schedule a trip on the bus.
Those with sever cognitive or developmental disabilities may need more intensive training than the volunteer Ambassador can provide. New riders will be assessed for their suitability for the program through a phone or personal interview.
How do I get an Ambassador to help me?

What will the Ambassador do?
The Ambassador will bring schedules and information about the bus and help plan a trip. Then the Ambassador will accompany the new rider on a bus trip, demonstrating features of the bus. The Ambassador will repeat the process until the rider feels comfortable about their ability to ride the bus alone.
What if I use a wheelchair?
All VINE buses are equipped with lifts for those passengers that use travel using a wheelchair or scooter. Once in the bus, the driver will secure the wheelchair or scooter. Nearly all buses will accommodate up to two wheelchairs at a time.
How much does the Ambassador program cost?
The Transit Ambassador Program is absolutely free to new bus riders in the program.
What are the benefits of working with an Ambassador?
Many times, the reason people don’t try to ride the bus is because they’re afraid of getting lost, taking the wrong bus or that they’ll not know what to do once they’re on the bus. They may find the schedule confusing and are afraid to ask questions.
An Ambassador can help alleviate many fears by becoming your “travel buddy”. Ambassadors are all bus riders themselves. They understand the challenge of trying something new. In fact, many of the Transit Ambassadors are disabled individuals and understand first hand the challenge of trying something new. They will do everything possible to assist and make your feel comfortable and confident as you learn how to use the transit system.
